An Auckland rest home has been investigated following information passed on to the Ministry of Health by Consumer.
The ministry’s investigation of Forrest Hill Continuing Care Complex, which provides rest home and hospital-level care, found the facility didn’t have a registered nurse on duty on all shifts for a period over November and December last year. Registered nurse cover is mandatory for all facilities providing hospital care.
The investigation also found instances where caregivers were carrying out the work of a registered nurse and administering medications. The rest home has been told to cease this practice.
The investigation stemmed from information given to Consumer, which we believed required action. The ministry found the complainant’s concerns about registered nurse cover were substantiated but didn’t find evidence to substantiate other complaints about lack of staff training and infection prevention.
