Baby bottle

In January we looked at the safety concerns raised about Bisphenol A - a chemical found in polycarbonate plastic. Infants may be especially vulnerable and in Canada there are precautionary moves to prohibit the sale of baby bottles containing BPA.

Last month the six largest manufacturers of baby bottles in the US said they would stop selling products made with BPA. This was after politicians asked them to voluntarily stop using the chemical - a decision made easier by major retailers no longer selling these bottles.

We asked the New Zealand distributors of Evenflo and Philips Avent (two of the US companies that sell products locally) what would happen here.

Philips Avent told us no decision has been made to sell only the BPA-free range in New Zealand. However, it is extending its BPA-free options for parents who want the choice.

Tas Baby Holdings Ltd, distributors of Evenflo, told us it expects the decision in the US will flow on to New Zealand and we will see only Evenflo BPA-free products sold here.

Our view

  • If companies are taking this approach in other countries, we'd expect them to do the same in New Zealand.
