A proposed scheme that would see your last 200 bill payments become part of your credit record has the initial support of the Tauranga Budget Advisory Service head - with reservations.

The Privacy Commissioner proposal, now open for public submission, would put your bill-paying on your credit record for two years, showing whether you were late with your electricity, gas or phone bills, mortgage or credit-card invoices, insurance, or other monthly payments.

Consumer NZ chief executive Sue Chetwin said it was "quite difficult" to get rid of bad credit on your record. She said giving credit-reporting agencies more information every month made it easier to rebuild a credit record.
