Cheap broadband ... but make sure you read the fine print.
Slingshot has an advertising campaign running for their new plan where you can save 50% on broadband for 6 months, with terms and conditions.
Those terms and conditions are that those prices only apply if you have your homeline and calling with Slingshot. This is outlined on the sign-up page:
- The 50% off broadband is for the first six months of a 12-month contract and only applies to the monthly plan price and its included data allowance.
- Slingshot will charge an additional $5 extra per month (or $2.50 a month for the first six months) if you don't have tolls with them or $10 per month ($5 a month for the first six months) if you don't have a landline with Slingshot.
So remember to read all the details before you sign up (and this is true for any plan), because you could be locked in for the long haul.
You can compare Slingshot’s new plans against other offerings on our new site www.telme.org.nz.

While trying to get naked broadband in the Wairarapa, I was directed to Slingshot via the Consumer page. The problem is that there is only really one offering at $80 per month. It is impossible to avoid line charges and toll plans which I don't want. VoIP incorporated into your broadband negates the need for "line rental", but the Telcos keep trying to push me into these types of packages...besides, I'd rather use my cell phone for the odd call. Give us naked broadband, and give it to us now.
I have been with Slingshot for 7 years, and have never had any problems that I can remember with any aspect of their service. I am overjoyed at their new plans -- 150GB for $60 and I certainly would not change unless their service deteriorates.
Slingshot rang me last night expounding the wonders of their deal - although it wasn't a 50% discount they offered over the phone, it was a $15.00 discount for the first 6 months. The total package offered was landline and 10Gb broadband per month for $66.00, down from the usual $81.00. This is cheaper than my current $97.00 Telstra package, so you'd think I'd have changed...but no. I did all the research when I changed from Telecom to Telstra 2 years ago, and decided Telstra was best then. Two years later, Telstra's service has been exemplary, with not a single problem with phone calls/line or broadband. I decided phone/internet isn't always about cost, sometimes it's about rewarding great service, so I told Slingshot this, and have elected to stay with Telsta.
We pay about $80/mo for Slingshot broadband and landline. We use toll cards or Skype to make all our tolls, so we have no contractual obligation to use their toll system.
I have had connection problems several times with the broadband and, although it takes quite a while for someone to answer the Slingshot help line, I've always found them very helpful - even when the problem was a setting on my Mac and not a direct Slingshot issue. I can understand why it takes so long for them to answer - because when I've talked to them, it's often taken 20 - 30 minutes to sort the problem out.
My mother had an account with Slingshot. She was having trouble with the connection and I helped out by contacting their support. Or I should say TRIED to. I remember at one point I had been in the queue waiting to speak to a human for over 40 minutes before I was answered. I tried multiple times over several weeks, all with the same result. In the end we gave up and switched provider (she wasn't locked in by contract), but again there was a major problem getting hold of anyone. I wouldn't go near them now.
I'm not a customer of them, but I have seriously considered switching over to them in the past. It was when I looked into the details, that I realised how long I would get locked into a contract, but most importantly, how much it would cost to get out of it (the termination fee). I gave them a call a few months ago, asking if they offered anything that wasn't a contract for 12 months, but it turns out they don't offer anything like that. Talk about pushing away business! And to top it all off, despite their generous data offers, I hear bad things about their line speeds. If they are going to offer more and charge less, then I can bet they haven't spent enough on the hardware needed to provide the full bandwidth required by some of their most demanding customers.
I used to have broadband and tolls with slingshot, paying $29.90 per month for 20 Gigabyte data. About 4 months ago, i get phone call from slingshot regarding upgrade our area and I can upgrade to better network, my broadband speed is up to 20 times faster, and get free voice service.I only pay $71.00 per month for both landline and broadband. But in reality, the speed isn't get any faster and I only have 5 gigabyte data per month, I need to pay about $20 more if I want 20 gigabyte data, and I can't change back to where it was before. I am not happy about that.
