Competition watchdog the Commerce Commission says it is aware of calls for it to start a price control inquiry into the domestic dairy market, and it has "an open mind'' on the matter.

Public interest in the dairy industry is currently high with a national coalition of community groups formed this week to try to force an investigation into the high cost of fresh milk and dairy products, and submissions to Government on Fonterra's capital restructuring plans alleging anti-competitive behaviour by the dairy giant.

There have been several calls this week, including from Green Party Sue Kedgley and Consumer New Zealand chief executive Sue Chetwin for the Commerce Commission to step in.
