Payroll giving

Payroll giving has long been established overseas and it’s finally available here.

Payroll giving lets you donate to charity through your wages. For every dollar you donate, you automatically get a third back as a tax credit.

The scheme is voluntary and it’s up to employers whether they offer it to staff. If it’s available in your workplace, you can make a donation directly from your pay to any “donee organisation” approved by Inland Revenue.

Donating to charity through your wages has advantages. The charity benefits by getting a steady stream of income that comes with few administration costs, unlike many other fundraising methods. This means more of your donation can go towards the charity’s real work. You also get a tax credit without the hassle of filing a claim at the end of the year.

Can’t decide which charity to support? Our report on charities provides info on how to choose.

Gave to Starship Hospital this way Posted by: Ken Burns 01 Feb 2010 8:30am

Well not the same way but for about 2 years $2 per month was added to our Mercury bill which went straight to Starship. It wasn't a lot but very regular in a small amount. Made us feel good as parents. Very easy scheme to manage
