Dyson Air Multiplier

Dyson Air Multiplier

We took a quick look at this alternative to an ordinary desk fan.

The Dyson Air Multiplier looks very different from ordinary desk fans. “No blades. No buffeting,” says the Dyson website. Air’s drawn into the base and is pushed around a ring, accelerating as it exits.

Does it work?

Four people compared the Dyson product with an ordinary desk fan from a local supermarket. They did this on both products’ various settings and distances.

The Air Multiplier didn’t move any more air over their bodies than the desk fan did. It did produce a more consistent stream of air – but one user thought this was a negative feature, because the multiplier’s stream of air was narrower than the desk fan’s.

Noise levels on the highest setting and at 2, 3 and 4 metres were about the same for both the Air Multiplier and the desk fan.

The verdict

The Air Multiplier’s easy to adjust and clean. It’s also safe around children as there are no accessible moving parts – the moving part (the impeller) is inside the cylindrical base.

The sticking point is the price. The Dyson Air Multiplier costs an eye-watering $479. None of the users was prepared to pay that much when they could buy an ordinary desk fan for less than $50.
