Shopping at the supermarket

We're pleased that Foodstuffs New Zealand, the country’s largest supermarket group, will introduce unit pricing in New World and Pak’n Save supermarkets by the end of June 2010.

We explained the advantages of unit pricing and called for Foodstuffs to introduce the system in 2008.

Unit pricing means displaying the price of goods per unit of measure – such as per 100g or per litre. This makes it easier to compare the price of products that come in different pack sizes – for example, cheese at 700g or 1kg. It means manufacturers can’t disguise price increases by reducing a pack size while keeping the price the same as before.

Progressive Enterprises stores (Countdown, Woolworths and Foodtown) already display unit prices on most products. So from the second half of next year supermarket shoppers will find it easier to work out which products offer the best value for money.

Displayed sale items deceiving Posted by: Evan Fray 13 Jul 2010 10:45am

PakNSave Lincoln Rd displayed all Burgen bread at a sale price but when at the check out I was charged a normal price for the wholemeal bread. Response was that it didn't mean that bread although the bread was directly under the sale price notice. I call this false advertising. Why should we have to put up with this deception. It is not the first time they have tried to trick me. I am fortunate that I remember all the prices of things in my shopping cart and watch as they go though but what about all the people who don't.
