Dame Vivienne Boyd

Dame Vivienne Boyd

Dame Vivienne Boyd died in July this year.

From 1975 to 1988 she was a member and then chair of Consumer’s governing board at the time (the Consumer Council) during a period of momentous change for the organisation. It was during her final term that Consumer lost its “government” status and became reborn as an incorporated society, which it remains today.

Dame Vivienne was heavily involved in the negotiations with the Labour Government of the day that saw our direct government funding phased out over the 1987/1988 and 1988/89 financial years. Since then Consumer has been independent from the government and receives no direct taxpayer funding.

Dame Vivienne was made a life member of Consumer and her family tells us that she continued to read Consumer magazine each month right up until her death. Apart from her service to the consumer movement, Dame Vivienne's other public contributions included being President of the National Council of Women (1978-1982) and Chair of the Abortion Supervisory Committee (1979-80).

Dame Vivienne was committed to serving the community and fostering the contribution of women to public life. We send our sympathy to her family and to all those who were close to her.
