People who live near the coast and own heat pumps run the risk of them corroding and are unlikely to be covered under warranty.

Most of the major heat pump manufacturer's warranties have exclusion clauses if the heat pumps are installed in corrosive environments such as the seaside, and places like Rotorua with its geothermal fields.

Hamish Wilson from Consumer New Zealand says the critical area is up to one kilometre from the sea and the closer to the sea the worse the problem is. Read more.
