"Verges on exploitation" was how Health and Disability Commissioner Ron Paterson described the treatment provided at the New Zealand Men's Clinic to four men with erection problems.

The Commissioner's investigation of complaints from the men found the Clinic's sole doctor provided a poor standard of care, treating the men as customers not patients.

The cases highlight the potential risks of maltreatment in this area of men's health where pricey potions are frequently touted as a "quick fix". Dr Steve Carroll, author of 'A Man's Guide to Health' (see below), says most cases of erectile dysfunction are associated with underlying medical conditions - such as diabetes, heart disease, high blood pressure, high cholesterol, and depression - or their medication. Men experiencing problems should therefore see their GP.

If you're considering going to a clinic which offers treatment for erection problems, make sure you check the qualifications of the person you're seeing and ask what the consultation will involve. Be aware it may be much more expensive than a visit to your GP.
