The number of people switching power companies hit an all time high last month following the launch of a Government-funded awareness campaign.

The Electricity Authority says almost 44,000 people switched power providers in June, a jump of 33 percent on the previous month.

Consumer New Zealand chief executive Sue Chetwin hopes the campaign will bring down power prices but says it is more likely it will only slow inevitable rises.
