The Ministry of Consumer Affairs says email scammers are using the Christchurch earthquake as an opportunity to prey on the good will of New Zealanders.

The emails, sent from "James McCoy", claim to be from "Donate4Charity NZ" and use a legitimate UK-based charity organisation's name and website address.

The scam asks for respondents to receive “donated funds” into their bank account from overseas for a 10% cut.

The Ministry advises anyone who receives such an email to not reply and delete it.

You can report a scam on the Ministry's Scamwatch page.
