School patrol sign

Police have been enforcing a strict 4 km/h tolerance outside schools. So if you're doing 55 km/h past a school, you could be up for a fine.

The lower tolerance applies within 250 metres of the boundaries for schools and pre-schools during high-use times. These can be any time between 7.30 am and 6 pm, or when schools are busy with other activities like sports or gala days.

What are the limits?

Usually, the limits are those for the road or street outside each school. This can mean any of the speed limits from 50, 60, 70, 80 to 100 km/h, as well as the Limited Speed Zone limit.

So there are schools where you could whiz by at 104 km/h! We hope everyone slows down to 50 km/h past country schools during high-use times.

A school can apply for an enforceable variable speed limit within its school zone. This is for a maximum of 40 km/h and only applies when special temporary signs are displayed.
