Shoppers are increasingly turning to haggling with big-ticket retailers in the hunt for a pre-Christmas bargain.

Jill Boswell, whose family owns Snapshot Cameras in Victoria St, Hamilton, said shoppers asking for a discount on the sticker price were increasing. "They are coming in with their catalogues from all the electrical stores saying, `Can you match this price?"' she said.

Sue Chetwin, chief executive of Consumer New Zealand, said haggling was becoming more prevalent in a difficult and competitive market.
