We’re pleased water efficiency rating labels will soon be appearing on water-using appliances and fittings like taps, showerheads and toilet cisterns following the expected introduction of new labelling regulations this month.
The new water rating label
The blue and white label (pictured) is similar to the energy rating label found on many appliances, including fridges and washing machines, and works in the same way: the more dark blue-coloured stars that are filled in out of the possible six, the better it is at using less water while achieving a good result.
The label also gives water consumption or flow figures so you’ll know how much water products use and can compare between products when buying.
Displaying labels will be mandatory, but there’s a 12-month transition to allow products time to be tested and registered.
Most labels will be on the product or on a tag so you can see the two together. If there’s no room, a sign is acceptable as long as it’s clear what product it relates to. The rating information must also be shown when products are promoted in magazines, pamphlets or on websites.
Eventually you’ll be able to search for products on a New Zealand database and compare water-use and efficiency online. The website is still being built and is expected to be fully functional towards the end of the year.
Our view
Water-rating labels are especially helpful for anyone living in a water-short area, on tank supply, or paying volumetric water charges. When buying water-using appliances and fittings it'll be easy to pick the ones that use less water.
