Iron enriched creeals Posted by: Patrick Edwards 09 Feb 2011 7:12am

I suffer from haemochromotosis (its quite common amongst people who's genes originate in the British Isles), which I manage through diet. It seems virtually impossible to find breakfast cereals in NZ which are not iron enriched. Why is this?

I also have haemochromotosis & it's so annoying as I love cereal. I'm always checking the ingredient list on the packet. I found Woolworths Homebrand Sultanas & bran has no iron mentioned on the ingredient list but whether it's just not mentioned I don't really know but I bought some anyway. I have venesection to manage my haemochromatosis but am conscious of things with added iron. I even saw some bread that had iron added. If people are low in iron surely they can take an iron pill. I wish they wouldn't add it to cereal. Also many people have haemochromatosis & don't even know it. So annoying I know...

Another thing I forgot to mention is that when you eat milk (calcium) with your cereal you are lowering the amount of iron absorbed anyway & if you add in a cup of tea on the side then even better...

Breakfast Cereal Posted by: Louise Wilson 09 Aug 2010 8:26pm

What do the red ticks beside some of the cereals stand for?

Thanks
