Cars brought via Trademe Car Dealers

We brought a car off a dealer on Trademe through the auction process, upon getting it home and taking it to the local garage two days later over concerns the heater was hardly working and radiator coolant didn't look to good. They found the radiator badly blocked and heater core needed to be replaced. Dealer tells us now that hes not oblidged to pay for anything as its brought at auction. Any ideas please.

I bought a new car in September 2006 with a 3 year warranty. I had no problems until Jan 2009 when the gearbox refused to come out of 'park' and the whole gear selection system had to be replaced under warranty. The dealer who arranged the work noted that I was lucky as the car was first registered in Feb 2006 and I had only 2 weeks of warranty left.
This despite the sale and purchase agreement dated 29 Sept 2006 showing zero kms on the speedo. I have no doubt that I could have insisted on the 3 years but it would have been a hassle as the dealer would have to pay rather than the manufacturer. It also explains why all 3 wiper blades perished in less than 2 years; with the car having spent its first 8 months sitting in a sunny Tauranga car yard.

Has Consumer investigated Extended Warranties on motor vehicles?
