free dental care is not always available

This all sounds very nice. But the reality is different. Our school dental nurse gave us a very short list of 'local free dentists' to take our daughter to. But we were turned down by the first two because we weren't patients there ourselves. They only take the children of parents who are patients. The other two on the list were across the other side of Auckland. We have always paid for our kids dental expenses ever since, at full price.
Nobody knows nothing

I have a three years old daughter. We were visited by several plunket nurses and we asked them how does the children's dental services in New Zealand work. We also asked our family doctor but nobody knows nothing. Thank you Consumer.org
