Money

Companies should “promptly refund or credit” any amount the consumer has been overcharged. But few contracts provide for this.

Contact, Empower, Energy Direct and Meridian state they’ll refund overcharged amounts but don’t say they’ll act “promptly”. Meridian Energy’s contract also specifies the right to decide how it’ll refund the money it owes you. And Energy Direct reserves the right to charge a fee for refunds.

5 companies – Bay of Plenty Energy, Just Energy, Nova Energy, Pulse Energy and Tiny Mighty Power – don’t mention refunds at all in their contracts. Just Energy and Pulse Energy told us they complied with the EA’s minimum terms “in practice”.
