Gas charges for Occupier of property

We recently moved into a property and signed up for power. The previous occupier had a gas and power connection (but the gas was not used and he was only paying for the line rental). He notified the company that he was leaving and they came to disconnect it 20 days afterwards. The previous occupier did give a final reading when he moved out. Later in the month we received a letter to say that we had to pay for 20 days gas line rental even though NO gas was used. They labeled the the bill to "Property Occupier", do we have to pay it even though we are not signed up with the company??? Thanks
