After a series of successful property do-ups Jackie (pictured) and her partner sold to buy their dream home on Auckland’s North Shore. But construction overruns on renovations at the new house left them struggling to make ends meet in the short term.

When building contractors knocked on their door the couple paid with money earmarked for monthly mortgage payments. That left them behind in their Westpac mortgage and facing a mortgagee sale.

A chance discussion with another bank’s employee led them to enableMe – a company offering “your fast path to financial freedom”. It is run by chartered accountants and describes itself as “financial personal trainers”.

Getting financially fit

enableMe’s founder, Hannah McQueen, told Consumer that the company charged by the hour much as solicitors and accountants, and the client’s interest always came first. If enableMe receives commission from the lender it is rebated to the customer. She likened the company’s approach to losing weight and getting fit.

“Everyone knows how to lose weight (or can find out on the internet) but many people choose to go to a nutritionist, personal trainer, Weightwatchers or Jenny Craig to help them put into action things they know they should be doing but don’t quite know how to get started or lack structure.”
