Here are some simple steps you can take to make sure your information is kept as private as you want it to be.
Step 1: Privacy settings are found in the top right corner under "Account".
Step 2: Starting with "Sharing on Facebook", click through the four options: Everyone, Friends of Friends, Friends Only, and Recommended.
Step 3: If one of those options suits you, select it, or customise your setting by clicking "Customise Settings" and setting each category to what you want.
Step 4: Under "Basic Directory Information" you can control who can find you when they search Facebook and what people can see if they find your Facebook profile.
Step 5: Under "Applications and Websites" you can control what information of yours is shared with Facebook Apps and other websites. The most important section of this is "Information accessible through your friends".
Step 6: Under "Information accessible through your friends" make sure you deselect anything you don't want shared with any applications or websites that your friends might use.
Step 7: Under "Public Search" you can control if you'd like your profile to be found by other searches (such as through Google).
