Halogen spotlights chew up plenty of power – so they’re expensive to run. Infra-red-coated (IRC) and xenon-halogen MR16 spotlights are a more energy-efficient alternative.
MR16 halogen spotlights are good for specific tasks like reading, craftwork or highlighting features such as pieces of art. But they often get used to light lounges – which they’re not as suitable for, because they cast a narrow beam of light. To get an even lighting spread you need quite a few spotlights … so it’s “ouch!” when the power bill arrives.
There’s a simple way around this. As your standard halogens burn out, replace them with more energy-efficient infra-red-coated (IRC) or xenon-halogen versions.
IRC and xenon-halogen spot lamps are around 30 percent more efficient than standard halogens, last longer and are a direct plug-in replacement. You can replace a standard 50W MR16 halogen spotlight with a 35W IRC or xenon-halogen version for the same light output.

What's the difference?
IRC halogens have a special coating that helps reflect infra-red light (heat) back on to the filament. Xenon-halogens have extra xenon gas in the bulb which reduces filament breakdown. In both cases less electricity is needed to keep the filament glowing white hot.
Different voltages?
MR16 halogen spotlights come in two types: 230 volts and 12 volts; you can get the more energy-efficient versions for both types.

You tell which is which by the different connections on the base of the bulb. The voltage will also be printed on the bulb.
- The 230-volt halogens have a GU10 base which has two pins with a "top-hat" shape. They push-in to the lampholder and rotate (similar to a conventional bayonet light bulb).
- The 12-volt versions use a GU5.3 base with two plain round pins sticking out that push straight into the lampholder.
