Thanks for the suggestions that we test fly sprays. We'll consider including a test in our forward programme, but at best it would be for next summer.

I would also appreciate a test of the automatic squirt sprays vs spray in a can.

Maybe I'm getting cynical in my old age - but even 15 years ago I can remember how much more effective basic cans of fly spray were compared to the weak rubbish I'm forced to buy now. I'm sure I'm not imagining how weak and ineffective these sprays are at killing flies. I wish Consumer would test all the current brands to discover the best ones. I've tracked individual flies in the house after spraying directly on to them and they don't look distressed at all. Once upon a time just the merest droplet would have them squirming. I suspect, yet again, another product has succumbed to the greed of multi-national companies by decreasing the active ingredient there by forcing us to use up the can faster in order that we buy more of their weak products. It's hardly rocket science - is it?!
Have recently had a pro treat our large old villa which hasn't been done for a while, how do we know they have done a good job for our money, didn't seem to take long. Any advice to check and for next time?

We had a rental property that was infested with cockroaches. We put an insect bomb in the ceiling (through the manhole) and have had no problems since. We saw them leaving in their droves though at the time.
