Logitech Lapdesk N700

Logitech Lapdesk N700

We tried a device to keep your lap cool while computing.

Laptops make life so much easier for those wanting to couch-compute. But laptops (unlike the new tablets) aren't really built for laps: they’re made of hard plastic or metal, they’re flat and slightly uncomfortable, and they’re usually hot. This heat can apparently be a problem for men.

A December 2004 study by State University of New York researchers said heat generated from laptops could significantly elevate the temperature of the scrotum, putting the user's sperm count at risk.

We reckon the most comfortable place to sit your laptop is on your thighs – not your crotch – and so the worst that could happen is warmed legs. However … we’ve tried the Logitech Lapdesk N700 ($150 RRP) that claims to alleviate some of the heat issues.

The N700 is a USB-powered fan and set of speakers set into a plastic tray which is mounted on a moulded cushion. The fan sits directly below the laptop and forces cool air over the hottest part of the laptop (the base, where the processor and battery sit).

Overall we don’t think the N700 is too useful – and we couldn’t help thinking during the trial that the N700 could be replaced with a cushion. But it does have an impressive little set of speakers and is comfortable when you’re sitting or reclining. So it's good for watching movies or listening to music on the couch or in bed.
