I hope this is current but we moved five years ago with Van Lines. They were not only the cheapest quote, they were the only ones who would come and physically measure up the volume of our contents. No damage, no breakages, on time, nice people to work with. We'll use them to move back north in two years time.
Goods lost in transit

I used the Moving Company to move my house goods from Auckland to Nelson. I paid over $1500 by credit card. I paid the company extra for corrugated cardboard packaging however packers turned up with butchers paper only. I felt quite nervous about the packers too, they looked like ex-crim's! And here they are responsible for packing and moving your entire life (gear). I was not happy. When my good arrived in Nelson, some things were broken and missing. I could not recover the missing items as they said they were unable to trace them due to other peoples goods being on the same truck. I was not able to be there when the goods were unpacked because the truck got there before me so I got a friend to mark the things off (but unfortunately she couldn't do much about it).
In the end I contacted the credit department at my bank and asked them to stop the payment because I told them that the company did not fulfil the obligations of the contract. They were sympathetic and although I had to do some fast talking, they actually DID put the payment on hold until I could write a letter of dispute to the company concerned. The result was that I refused to pay 25% of the bill, and in the end they accepted this. So I won the day, but that doesn't really make up for the broken and lost items or the STRESS!
Query!

I received this issue tonight (29.10.10) so cannot fathom how there are comments dated 13.10.10 on this report. Can somebody please explain?
I recently moved from the bottom of the North Island to the top and bought transit insurance under my contents policy through my bank.
I insured $30,000 which cost $100 transit insurance. The moving companies couldn't match it and suggested I go with my insurance company.
Personally, I think the moving companies should cover the insurance then they might actually be careful with the items they are moving.
Moving woes

Have moved lots of times internationally and locally and used different companies. Crown were the worst. Took insurance and they damaged a drier. They would not pay up. Said it was my fault!
Beware when you contract one mover and they use an agent.......Each will blame the other when something goes wrong and you're left with the broken item....
Stuck between a rock and a hard place whether you take insurance or not. It can go both ways...

I think the issue here is why should we pay to cover the removal company if they break something!? They should be covering themselves.
And surely they can negotiate overall insurance cover vastly cheaper than around $1,500 per job!
We used Crown, declined the insurance, the guys were very careful and we saved at least $1,500 on rip-off insurance.
