Hair straighteners
Introduction
We trialled 6 hair straighteners priced from $60 to $350. Find out if price made a difference to performance.
A good set of hair straighteners should glide through your hair, taming frizz and smoothing out curls. We asked 10 volunteers to give us their verdict on each of the straighteners, and we also tested the straighteners for electrical safety and to see how fast they heated up.

Checklist

Here's what to look for if you're thinking about buying hair straighteners.
Plate size
Slim to medium-width plates are suitable for most hair types. Wider plates may speed up the styling process (particularly for those with longer hair) but they’ll make the straightener bulkier and perhaps heavier.
Control buttons
The position of some models’ control buttons meant that our triallists could accidentally switch the straightener off during use. Before you buy, check that the on/off button isn’t where your fingers would usually hold the straightener.
Ready-to-use indicator
It’s handy when there’s a “beep” or flashing light to let you know when the straightener has reached the right temperature.
Adjustable heat-settings
This is useful for people with fine or damaged hair who want to use the straightener at a lower heat.
Auto switch-off / sleep mode
You’ll never again have to wonder “did I remember to switch it off?” once you’ve left the house.
- Auto switch-off means the heating elements turn off after a certain period of time.
- Sleep mode means the heating elements turn off and there’s a periodic beep that reminds you to switch the straightener off.
Accessories
Some straighteners come with a carry case. Others have a protective heat-resistant mat for resting the straightener on while it’s in use.
Dual voltage
This lets you use your straightener overseas (provided you have the correct adaptor plug).
