looks like they enjoy using xtra email addresses... who would trust a 'reputable' website - that doesn't have their own domain name to email, and the fact the domain name is registered through a USA proxy agent..

PC Genius Posted by: Danna Challies 30 Aug 2011 5:41pm

Got a call from a guy claiming that my computer was sending information to Microsoft that it was infected.

He claimed to be calling from PC Genius in Auckland, and working for Microsoft.

I told him I was busy and would ring back. He gave me this number: 09 887 3617

A friend of mine had a similar call after she bought a computer from Noel Leeming. Thing was, she had never connected to the internet. She believed that her details had been accessed from Noel Leeming when she bought her (first ever) new computer. Her caller insisted that her new computer was sending error messages in spite of not being on the net at all.

Where can we report these scammers to?

I found 'Report a scam' in the Ministry of Consumer Affairs. Have reported these buggers there.

Microsoft support phone calls. Posted by: Michael Hawkins 06 Jun 2011 12:24pm

I have had a couple.
Fairgo talked about it in this episode. http://tvnz.co.nz/fair-go/pc-virus-cold-callers-6-23-video-4203083
I have talked to all of them and they send you to a site www.ammyy.com which has Free Remote Desktop and PC Remote Control software.
DONT do it once you have installed this they will have control of your computer.

Virus support phone call Posted by: Jo Sutherland 18 Apr 2011 6:27pm

We had this tonight too, after I told the guy we didn't have microsoft as we run Snow Leopard, I told him he was a fraud and hung up. He then rang back and told my husband he objected to being called a fraud, despite us not even running Windows, which he insisted that we did. Strange behaviour.

Avoid www.SupportVirtual.com Posted by: Michelle Wheatley & John Anson 21 Nov 2010 12:52pm

I got a phone call from phone number 91618 on 16Nov and was told that my computer was infected with a virus. I played along and they told me:
- They get a copy (though the "Internet Protocol") of error Microsoft reports that your PC offers to send when an application fails
- That the Windows event viewer showed all the infections my computer had downloaded: Blue (information) events were junk files, yellow (warning) and red (error events) were infections.

The woman directed me to the website: www.SupportVirtual.com
After about 10 minutes, she abruptly hung up.

Googling "supportvirtual.com scam" returns pages suggesting this site has been used for scams in other countries.
