Solar water heating Posted by: oldfossicker 27 Jun 2009 8:44pm

We have moved to a near new house with the closed loop type of heating. There is a warning light that indicates when the water/glycol mix gets below a certain level. The holding (overflow) tank needs topping up every few days which suggests there is a leak somewhere.
We have already spent more than the anticipated power saving in an attempt to fix the problem.
No joy and I wonder whether anyone else has had a similar problem?

Hi David,

Being a solar hot water installer, I might be able to help you?Can you tell me the model and type of system you have? Definitely sounds like a leak in the system. I would have thought that would be relatively easy to resolve, unless there is a leak in the heat exchanger inside the storage cylinder.
Happy to discuss over the phone.

Solar hot water panels Posted by: Chris Ogilvie 16 Jun 2009 9:56pm

The input of heat into a solar panel will be much the same per sq meter, regardless of type. However the heat losses from the vacuum tube type are way less. Thereby the vacuum tubes work well under very marginal conditions of patchy sun, wind, and cold air. I have used both; the tubes are way ahead. Which brings me to the other problem; they can be boiling by 10am in the summer, and users would do well to consider connecting up to a swimming pool (via a heat exchanger) or such! The control system needs to be able to handle this overheat situation, also, as well as frost. Cheers!
