More Practical than tactical Posted by: lcmortensen 08 Aug 2010 4:08pm

Some of the factors affecting supermarket layout are more practical than tactical:
*Dairy, frozens, meat, seafood and deli are around the periphery mainly because of refrigeration needs - the pipes from the cabinet to the store's central refrigeration unit then don't have to cross the store.
* Produce and Bakery are around the periphery because the have vast storage and preparation areas nearby.
* Bread is placed towards the end of the store because otherwise it would get squashed in your trolley by the time you got to checkout.

In-store Promotions Posted by: Rachel1 26 Jan 2010 4:07pm

You asked online members what was most important to them when choosing a supermarket. The 1307 people who responded said that a good variety of products, convenient location, and low prices were their most important. However you listed in-store promotions as one of the least important reasons to shop at a particular supermarket. Surely in-store promotions means lower prices. If you remove instore promotions, then we’ll be paying higher prices for our groceries? Could you please clarify.

Store layouts Posted by: MacThistle 11 Sep 2009 2:31pm

I find I am getting very good at just going straight to the product I want to purchase and ignoring altogether the aisles that dont have what I need ( notice I say 'need' not 'want'). It pays to get to know the layout of your usual store/s and if possible to shop after having had a meal! When not so hungry you tend to buy differently than if you are ravenous etc. Meal planning is also a bonus. I find it better too not to buy all vege and fruit at once as they will deteriorate fairly quickly after 3 to four days. But yes it is a pain to have to walk all the way to the back of any store for the basic milk and bread, at those times the dairy on my route home gets my custom, now and then I dont mind paying the higher price just for the convience.
