This is not a plug for a product, but a pointer to a significantly different approach in tramping packs that may be worth considering if you're having trouble with heavy loads. The downside, is you'll not blend into the crowd and the setup/adjustments are a bit fiddlier. The only reason I referring to a product is that currently I don't think there is anyone else making anything like it (BTW, it's a local NZ design) :
