Here's a selection of games to appeal to everyone in the family:

The Lego series
(Wii, Xbox 360, PlayStation 2 & 3, DS, PSP)
From Lego Star Wars through to Indiana Jones and Batman, this series has been popular – and when you start playing it’s easy to see why. The games play out like parodies of their respective movies and combine fun gameplay with spot-on humour. With two-player support, they’re perfect for playing with your kids.

The SingStar series
(PlayStation 2 & 3)
There are over a dozen versions of SingStar on PlayStation 2 or 3 – the trick is to choose one with a song line-up you like. The goal is to get the highest score by singing in the correct pitch. It’s simple and great for large gatherings. Be warned: if you pick the wrong version, you will be hearing a lot of awful pop songs.

Wii Sports
(Wii)
Handily, this game is bundled with the console. It’s a collection of sports such as tennis, bowling, and boxing that are made fun through the Wii’s motion control. When you want to swing a racket, you actually swipe with your arm – it doesn’t get much simpler than that. Perhaps that’s why a six-year old beat me in bowling.

Flower
(PlayStation 3 downloadable title)
This is a small game that you download onto your PlayStation 3 from the online store. You play a flower petal zooming over lush terrain. It may sound strange, but it’s one of the most peaceful and immersive video games around.
