Group pushes for Games captioning

Deaf community says event should be captioned.

In Scotland, people who are deaf or have hearing loss are being asked to comment on the quality of the Commonwealth Games captioning. In New Zealand, there is no captioning for the event.

The deaf community are using the Commonwealth Games to illustrate the struggle they are having getting broadcast captioning.

The Captioning Working Group believes the lack of captioning for the Commonwealth Games coverage treats the deaf and hard of hearing like they aren’t citizens of the Commonwealth.

The group’s chair Louise Carroll has written to Prime Minister John Key about the issue.

She said research showed that until legislation is enacted, broadcasters will not introduce a reasonable rate of captioning.
