The Philips Pasta and Noodle Maker takes the hard work out of making fresh pasta and noodles. It mixes and kneads the dough then extrudes it using one of four shaping discs: spaghetti, penne, fettuccini and lasagne.
The only part you need to do yourself is cut the pasta to length as it comes out of the machine and, of course, clean up.
You can make 300g or 600g of pasta or noodles in 10 or 15 minutes from start to finish. Following instructions from the supplied recipe book, we made two batches of spaghetti, penne and lasagne, first using plain all-purpose flour and then using a mix of durum flour and all-purpose flour. To test the machine’s versatility, we also made soba noodles, using spelt flour, and gluten-free spaghetti.
If you follow the recipe measurements, you get evenly mixed dough that can be cooked to perfection.
A few points worth noting. With less mixture at the end of the extruding cycle, some pieces were uneven and tore easily. When making penne, some pieces tore and split throughout the extruding cycle. There’s also no control over thickness (unlike a manual pasta maker) so we found the lasagne sheets were too thick and required blanching before baking.
Ease of use
The machine is fairly quiet when operating and easy to assemble, but it has many parts, none of which are dishwasher safe. After use, some dough remains inside the disc and around the blade. It’s best to leave leftover dough to dry slightly before using the cleaning tools to remove it. The exterior is very easy to wipe and once all the parts are clean, it has a convenient storage drawer for the discs and cleaning tools.
Overall, we were impressed – the Pasta and Noodle Maker makes light work of what can be a time-consuming job, but it can take a few attempts to get perfect results. The major downside is the price. With a suggested retail price of $499.95, it’s a considerable investment and only worth making if you often make pasta from scratch.
