The fund provides support by meeting the costs of filing a claim in the tribunal.

Consumer NZ established the Freda Love Fund after receiving a donation from Robert Love, a Consumer NZ member who won his tribunal case against rest home provider Bupa Care Services.

The tribunal found Bupa failed to provide services to Mr Love’s mother to the standard required and misled him about its capacity to deliver those services. Bupa was ordered to refund Mr Love $10,000, which he donated to Consumer NZ.

The fund is called the Freda Love Fund, in memory of Mr Love’s mother.

Taking a Disputes Tribunal case

Disputes Tribunals are the modern version of a small claims court.

The tribunal can hear claims for amounts up to $30,000.

Disputes Tribunal fees are staggered, based on the amount of money claimed.

  • Under $2000, the fee is $45
  • $2000 to $4999, the fee is $90
  • $5000 to $20,000, the fee is $180.

To support your claim, you will need to have good evidence. See our report on Disputes Tribunals for guidance on how to prepare your case.
