Security features will make it easier to spot a counterfeit.
New-look $5 and $10 banknotes will be released on 12 October, with $20, $50 and $100 notes to follow in April next year.
Because the first notes being released ($5 and $10) don’t get banked very often, it could be a while before you get one but you can expect to see more of them in the lead-up to Christmas. The other notes will update faster, as they are dispensed by ATMs and get banked more frequently.
The notes are the same size and have the same feel as the current notes but are brighter. They also have new security features, including the native bird icon changing colour as the note is tilted and a bar seen to be moving through the space. A small "puzzle number" can be seen when the note is held up to the light and a larger window has a more detailed metallic element. The same New Zealanders, the Queen and flora and fauna have been used on the new notes.
Existing notes will still be able to be used once the new ones are released with both sets legal tender for the foreseeable future.
