Recall: Te Kouma Bay half shell oysters

Some of the oysters have elevated levels of E.coli.

The problem

Kia Ora Seafoods has recalled some of its Te Kouma Bay brand Half Shell Coromandel Pacific Oysters because they have elevated levels of E.coli.

Affected Te Kouma Bay Half Shell Coromandel Pacific Oysters were sold individually unwrapped, or as 12 half shell oysters in a plastic tray covered by plastic wrap.

Trays with with following batch and date markings are affected:


  • 5822
  • 5823

Date markings

  • Best Before (Chilled): 04/09/2016, 05/09/2016 and 06/09/2016
  • Best Before (Frozen): 28/03/2018, 29/03/2018 and 30/03/2018

The product is sold in Pak’nSave and New World supermarkets throughout the North Island. It was also sold in the following retail stores as individual half shell oysters during these timeframes:

  • Moana Pacific Fisheries (Wellington), 29/09/2016 – 01/10/2016
  • Manukau City Seafoods (Auckland), 29/09/2016 – 02/10/2016

The product has also been exported to the United States (Hawaii only) and French Polynesia.

What to do

Check the batch number and date mark on the product label. Affected products should not be consumed. If you have consumed this product and have any concerns about illness, seek medical advice.

Return affected products to your retailer for a full refund.
