New Zealanders were asked about the big issues that are causing concern for them. Whether that’s a financial worry, economic instability, or a threat to health, these are the issues that are at the top of the ‘worry’ list.
Covid-19 has overtaken house pricing as the most concerning issue for New Zealanders (51% cf. 26% in the previous survey, June ‘21). This is of particular concern for those in Auckland (56%), Northland (54%), and Wellington (54%).
Housing and cost of living are the next two major issues (41% and 29%, respectively). Housing is highest among those aged 30-39 (48%).
Note: At the time of the second survey (October 2021), Auckland was in Alert Level 3, the rest of New Zealand remained in Alert Level 2. During fieldwork, parts of Waikato moved into Alert Level 3, Auckland remained at Alert Level 3, and the rest of New Zealand remained at Level 2.
Other issues of concern to New Zealanders include race relations/racism (9%), unemployment (7%), immigration (6%), taxation (5%), water quality at rivers and beaches (4%), packaging waste (4%), domestic political issues (4%), quality of aged care (3%), transportation (3%), quality of drinking water (3%), trade with other nations (3%), savings/investments (2%), food safety (2%).
