Sentiment tracker - Property ladder

Tracking New Zealanders’ opinions on a range of issues, the Sentiment Tracker is a nationally representative study.

With property prices increasing, the goalposts are constantly shifting for many homebuyer hopefuls. The accelerating number of people “locked out” of the housing market is dramatically changing the property landscape.

Key facts

The largest proportion of people who are saving for a property but can’t catch up are young people (those aged 18-29: 26%; those aged 30-39: 32%). Overall, 42% of those who don't own a property feel locked out of the market, with this perception increasing with age.
