  • Standard irons are compact and cheap – perfect if you don’t do a lot of ironing. Learn which features will make your life easier, which will keep you safe and what the best soleplate materials are.

  • Steam stations are the heavy-duty option, producing more steam and removing creases quickly. They’re bulkier, though, and require a vented ironing board.

  • Garment steamers are gentle and versatile, but don’t work on all fabrics. Look out for a model with wheels and a telescopic pole.
