Bottom line: NOTE: This smoke alarm has been recalled because it may not detect smoke properly if a protective cap was left on one of the smoke sensors. See the recall notice for more information. This dual-sensor smoke alarm is very good at detecting fast (flaming) fires and very good at detecting slow (smouldering) fires. But it doesn't come with a long-life battery.

About our test
Our test was conducted in the fire laboratory of the Building Research Association (BRANZ). We purchased 3 examples of each model. Our results are the average of the performances of the 3 examples.
The alarms were fixed to a ceiling panel in a mocked-up hallway adjacent to the door opening of a fireproof room (which was about the size of a single-car garage).
In both tests, the smoke density was measured at the location of the alarms using a laser light-source and detector.

When it works, it works well.
We have four of these alarms installed in our house. We have had to replace two of them because the alarm comes on and then does not stop. This is after cleaning them out to make sure there was not dust in them. They just started sounding their alarm and then would not stop. After taking the battery out and putting it back in, the alarm just started up again. I am now looking for an alternative.
