We tested high-end virtual reality headsets that have to be tethered to a computer or game console, plus cheaper options that use a smartphone.
User comfort score (40%) - A judgement after a 10-minute session by our tester, which considers the following aspects of each headset: sizing and adjustments, padding, heat and fogginess, cable management and freedom of movement, and the comfort of any supplied controllers and navigation methods.
Performance (35%) - A judgement by our tester of the following elements: image detail, headset field of view, image focus, image blurring, tracking latency, and overall immersion.
Ease of use (25%) - The process of installing and getting each headset up and running; driver and firmware updates are taken into consideration, in addition to downloading and installing content, such as games and experiences; the control method for each headset is also assessed.
