Is lead lurking in your home?

Find out where lead might be hiding in your home to avoid getting sick from lead poisoning.

Lead poisoning is a serious public health issue, and lead is one of the World Health Organization’s 10 global chemicals of concern.

Frequent exposure to even small amounts of lead can be dangerous. It’s difficult for the body to excrete lead. Over time, the metal can build up to toxic levels and harm health.

  • Children, including unborn babies and breastfeeding infants, are the most at risk due to the harmful neurological effects from lead exposure.

  • In adults, lead can cause an increased risk of high blood pressure, cardiovascular problems, kidney damage and neurological issues.

According to the World Health Organization, there is currently no known safe level of lead exposure.

Our investigations highlight where lead might be hiding around your home. We also tested 40 lipsticks and bronzers and imported tapware, to see if they pose a risk.

Health New Zealand | Te Whatu Ora funded our investigations, including the heavy metals testing of cosmetics and tapware. This was part of the organisation’s ongoing efforts to understand and prevent lead poisoning.
