5 tips for getting the most out of your dehumidifier

Dehumidifiers can be a great help if you have persistent damp problems, regular condensation, or a house that’s been affected by a leak or flood.

They’re also handy for drying laundry and other wet gear when it’s raining outside, while minimising the amount of moisture that’s absorbed by your home and furnishings.

How you use and maintain your dehumidifier affects how well it works. Here are our top 5 tips for getting the most out of your dehumidifier.

1. Vacuum first

We recommend vacuuming the room before using your dehumidifier, otherwise the filter can clog up quickly.

2. Place in the centre of a room

Dehumidifiers perform best for general dehumidifying when placed in the centre of a room with doors and windows shut. Put one near your drying rack when drying laundry indoors, ideally in a small room. But give it enough space so its air intake and outlet aren’t obstructed.

3. Use at the same time as your heater

In the colder months, use your dehumidifier together with your heat pump, woodburner or electric heater. It’ll help your dehumidifier suck up moisture faster. Woodburners and heat pumps will keep your home drier too.

4. Set the humidity level to 30%–50%

Many dehumidifiers have an adjustable humidistat allowing you to set the humidity level. Removing too much moisture from the air can result in dry skin, throat and eyes. We recommend setting the humidity to 30%–50%. This will effectively minimise dust mites and reduce the growth of mould and bacteria, which can cause health problems and damage your home.

5. Clean the water tank and filter often

Your dehumidifier’s water tank and filter should be cleaned regularly in accordance with the user manual. This will keep it running efficiently and prevent circulating mould, bacteria and dust around your home. Always empty and dry the water tank before putting your dehumidifier into storage.
