Sunscreens

We aren’t testing sunscreens this summer. Sunscreens sold in New Zealand are now regulated under the Sunscreen (Product Safety Standard) Act and must meet the Australian and New Zealand sunscreen standard, which has requirements for independent testing.

While we’re still campaigning for regular mandatory sunscreen testing we’ve developed a sunscreen database, to help you decide which sunscreen to buy.

Why is this free?

Our sunscreen database is free thanks to support from Te Whatu Ora - Health NZ. We’re dedicated to getting NZ consumers a fairer deal. We provide as much information as we can for free but we rely primarily on membership and donations to fund our work. You can help by becoming a Consumer member or making a donation. Yeah
Pros

Having no water this is space efficient. As a bike packer little is required for coverage and a tube lasts a comparatively long time.

Cons

It is greasy but I find that this soaks in given time.

Recommend it?

Maybe, it depends on what you're after.

Yeah nah yeah nah
Pros

Some ethical claims - no water used, packaging made from sugar cane, tints used in the Bronze and Medium varieties can be used instead of foundation and they can be blended with each other to give a variation of tint. Made in NZ.

Cons

Greasy. I have fine flyaway hair which blows onto my face, after applying Skinnies it can look greasy pretty quickly unless I tie my hair back. I regularly use the Medium and Bronze varieties blended on my face, however I do have to blot with a tissue after applying to minimise the shiny look and keep the greasiness to a minimum. If applying to rest of body need to be careful about getting on clothing.

I can see from the consumer list that there are some mineral sunscreens with tints so I might have a look at them.

Recommend it?

Maybe, it depends on what you're after.
