  • How we test

Carpet stain testing

We soil cream-coloured carpet with five staining materials: red wine, coffee, sauces, foundation and dirt/oil. Then we take reflectance readings of the soiled carpet stains.

We follow the directions for applying the carpet stain remover product we’re testing, including the amount of time it should be left on the stain. The time differs depending on the manufacturer’s recommendation.

Once the product is removed, we take reflectance readings again. The readings are used to calculate the percentage of soiling material removed.

We repeat the test four times for each stain – so 16 carpet tiles for each product.
