We’ve tested a range of large and small suitcases to see which are most durable and easiest to use.

Overall score breakdown

Our overall score for luggage includes:

Performance

We conduct three tests to assess durability and water resistance:

  • Lift and drop test: We load the suitcases (4kg for small cases and 15kg for large models), raise them to 90cm and drop them onto their wheels. We repeat 300 times or until they break.

  • Puncture test: We drop a heavy pointed cylinder onto the cases and check whether they got punctured or otherwise damaged.

  • Rain test: We stuff the cases with newspaper and simulate 10 minutes of heavy rain to see how wet they get inside.

Ease of use

We assess how easy the cases are to move and carry, considering their weight, stability, handle comfort and adjustability, and how well their wheels roll across different surfaces. We get several testers to take the cases over rough and smooth surfaces, indoors and out, up and down stairs, through doorways and into lifts.
