Should be illegal

Great work pointing this out Consumer. I won't be visiting The Warehouse or Noel Lemming again. There should be no need to collect ANY personal bio data on customers. It needs to be illegal. For all the privacy act protections in place, big retailers and social media companies are abusing their customers in this regard. And it's not just those companies, many cities are putting in place significant numbers of street cameras over the past 2 years or so. What data are they collecting, where is it stored and how is it being used? I guarantee it's not just for traffic management purposes.

More than face recognition

Our right to privacy is abused by more than businesses/authorities using face recognition software.

Surveillance capitalism is based on taking our private data without any informed consent and using it to profile us and use that information to manipulate us, eg via targeted advertising.

Major surveillance capitalists include Google/Alphabet and Facebook.

The law in New Zealand is seriously deficient on privacy protection from surveillance capitalism.

The Excellent Work of Consumer

Thank you again Consumer for the excellent work of your team. I have been with Consumer since your first edition and over the years your work has benefitted everyone in New Zealand, this article should alert everyone to the implications of the biometric recording. Let's hope that the OPC has everything under control to protect us NZers. Thank you.
